Surface charge of rare earth phosphate (monazite) in aqueous solutions

The surface charge mechanisms of monazite were studied using electrokinetic tests, solution equilibrium calculations, crystal structure characterization, and electrostatic model predictions. The isoelectric point (IEP) of a natural monazite sample was found to occur at pH6.0. To allow a theoretical study of the surface charge on monazite, fundamental values associated with cerium monazite (CePO4) were utilized to quantify the isoelectric point (IEP) and point of zero charge (PZC) using solution equilibrium calculations and electrostatic models. The IEP and PZC of the cerium monazite were determined to be equal with a pH value of 7.2. Hydroxyl and hydrogen were found to be potential determining ions and preferential hydrolysis of the lattice ions played a minor role. The findings support the hypothesis that the charge of monazite surfaces in water is a result of protonation/deprotonation reactions. The difference in the IEP values obtained for the natural monazite and cerium monazite along with the wide range of values reported in literature may be partially explained by the amount of carbon dioxide dissolved in solution. When equilibrating with carbon dioxide at 10–3.5atm partial pressure, the IEP of the cerium monazite shifted to a solution pH value of 4.5.

Characterization of highly charged titanium ions produced by nanosecond pulsed laser

AbstractIn this work, plasma is produced by irradiating a Ti target with 10 ns pulsed Nd:YAG (λ = 1064 nm) laser. The laser fluence at the target was varied in the range of 2–20.3 J/cm2. The ion signal from freely expanding Ti plasma in vacuum was characterized with the help of ion collector and time-of-flight electrostatic energy analyzer. The ion charge state was found to increase with the laser fluence and maximum available ion charge in this fluence range is Ti4+. A correlation between the intensities of various ion charge states was observed, which indicates that higher charge states are most probably produced through stepwise ionization mechanism. It is also observed that charge state distribution of plasma can be controlled by variation of the laser fluence. In addition, energy distribution of ion charge states Tin+ (n = 1–4) is measured by varying back plate voltage of the electrostatic energy analyzer for a fixed laser fluence of 20.3 J/cm2. Ions energy distributions were in the range of 0.36–3.0 keV and the most probable ion energy was found to increase linearly with ion charge state. The estimated equivalent potential at the laser fluence of 20.3 J/cm2 is about 310 V. These results are in good agreement with the predictions of electrostatic model of ion acceleration in laser plasma.

Holding onto Electrons in Alkali Metal Halide Clusters: Decreasing Polarizability with Increasing Coordination

The connection between the electronic polarizability and the decrease of the system size from macroscopic solid to nanoscale clusters has been addressed in a combined experimental and model-calculation study. A beam of free neutral potassium chloride clusters has been probed using synchrotron-radiation-based photoelectron spectroscopy. The introduction of "effective" polarizability for chlorine, lower than that in molecules and dimers and decreasing with increasing coordination, has allowed us to significantly improve the agreement between the experimental electron binding energies and the electrostatic model predictions. Using the calculated site-specific binding energies, we have been able to assign the spectral details of the cluster response to the ionizing X-ray radiation, and to explain its change with cluster size. From our assignments we find that the higher-coordination face-atom responses in the K 3p spectra increase significantly with increasing cluster size relative to that of the edge atoms. The reasons behind the decrease of polarizability predicted earlier by ab initio calculations are discussed in terms of the limited mobility of the electron clouds caused by the interaction with the neighboring ions.

Revised electrostatic model of the LISA Pathfinder inertial sensor

A comprehensive electrostatic finite-element (FE) analysis of the LISA Pathfinder Inertial Sensor (IS) has been carried out at Astrium GmbH. Starting with a detailed geometrical model of the IS housing and test mass (TM) flight units, FE results were derived from multiple analyses runs applying the Maxwell 3D field simulation software. The electrostatic forces and torques on the TM in 6DoF, as well as all non-negligible capacitances between the TM, the 18 electrodes, and the housing, have been extracted for different TM translations and rotations. The results of the FE analyses were expected to confirm the existing IS electrostatic model predictions used for performance analysis, simulations, and on-board algorithms. Major discrepancies were found, however, between the results and the model used so far. In general, FE results give considerably larger capacitance values than the equivalent infinite non-parallel plate estimates. In contrast, the FE derived forces and torques are in general significantly lower compared to the analytic IS electrostatic model predictions. In this paper, these results are discussed in detail and the reasons for the deviations are elaborated. Based on these results, an adapted analytic IS electrostatic model is proposed that reflects the electrostatic forces, torques, and stiffness values in the LISA Pathfinder IS significantly more accurate.
